| Who Are You When You’re Helping? It is easier to examine the history of volunteerism or identify harmful patterns in an organization than it is to ask what we personally carry into a helping relationship. This reflective session turns the lens inward. Through video, cultural figures including Karen and Kevin, and a careful comparison of the stereotypes surrounding Karen and “Keisha,” participants will explore how identity influences whom we believe, protect, fear, comfort, correct, or excuse. We will notice what happens when our intentions are questioned, our help is declined, or our image of ourselves as kind and helpful becomes unsettled. This session will not offer a quick solution or a checklist for becoming one of the “good ones.” It invites participants to stay with the mirror long enough to see something new.
