| White Supremacy Culture in Helping and Volunteerism
White supremacy culture does not appear only through open hatred or extremist beliefs. It can also live inside habits that organizations reward as professional, efficient, objective, helpful, or simply “the way things are done.”
In this non-blaming but candid session, participants will examine how perfectionism, urgency, paternalism, power hoarding, one right way, avoidance of conflict, individualism, and hero culture can influence volunteer programs and helping relationships. We will also look more closely at saviorism and what can happen when generosity becomes entangled with authority, identity, gratitude, and the need to be perceived as good. The purpose is not to identify bad people. It is to recognize powerful patterns that good intentions alone cannot prevent. |
