The Nicholas & Dorothy Cummings Foundation’s focus is on improving access to behavioral care for all. The Foundation’s behavioral health grant was created to support programs and educational efforts to enhance best practices in behavioral health.


Eligibility

To be eligible, applicants must be recognized 501(c)(3) public charities; international grantees must demonstrate nonprofit status or an equivalent designation in their respective countries. This may include research organizations, educational institutions, professional organizations supporting behavioral health efforts, or similar organizations.


Eligible organizations should work on one or more of the following priority areas:

  • Prioritize direct engagement opportunities for children and adults in order to provide programs the ability to start or expand direct services.
  • Conduct research in the field of behavioral health.
  • Provide professional development in an effort to change how we think about mental health so that all humans can seek and access the help they need to live a positive and productive life.

Funding

Available funds: Grants are expected to range from $25,000 to $150,000, with one award up to $250,000.


Application timelines: 

  • Request for applications opens September 1, 2025, 8:00 am PT
  • Request for applications due by September 26, 2025, 5:00 pm PT
  • Award letters emailed by December 19, 2025


If your organization is awarded a grant, you will receive a grant agreement for review and signature pending any additional due diligence requirements. Payment of the grant typically will be processed within 30 days once the grantee organization returns the signed agreement.


Grant projects must be completed within a 12-month timeframe.

Section 2: Project information

The Nicholas & Dorothy Cummings Foundation requires reports on the use of the funds, compliance with the terms of the grant, and the progress made by the grantee toward achieving the purposes for which the grant was made.


The grantee must make an annual accounting of the funds at the end of its accounting period and must make a final report on all expenditures made from the funds in addition to the progress made toward the goals of the grant.


If fund use will span the entire 12 months, a quarterly update report is required on progress of the program, as well as a financial status report.

Section 4: Budget and budget narrative

Applicants must submit a budget and a budget narrative that provide a discussion of, or explanation for, items included in the budget. All expenditures should be aligned with the grant application request and be reasonable, necessary, and allowable. Please include all anticipated expenses, such as in this example:

If your organization is selected, you must be able to provide the following documents for review by the finance committee:

  1. Your organization’s most recent financial audit. If your organization does not have a financial audit, please provide financial statements for the last three years. If your organization has not been operating for three years, please provide financial statements from your inception to date.
  2. Your organization's policies or procedures for managing grant funds, including financial controls and reporting guidelines.
  3. A copy of your IRS 501(c)(3) determination letter.
