Bayou Sorrel Lock Replacement Survey

The USACE has initiated a study to re-evaluate the benefits associated with replacing the Bayou Sorrel Lock with a larger structure.

The study is CRITICAL to determine if the federal government will move forward with the project.

Stakeholder input regarding the benefits associated with a larger structure MUST BE FULLY IDENTIFIED AND DOCUMENTED to support the USACE's decision-making and approval process.

The below survey questions provide important stakeholder input to inform USACE decision making.

GICA requests vessel operators who rely on the Bayou Sorrel Lock to support their current or future business model complete the below survey.

GICA requests survey data no later than 15NOV25.

GICA will submit the collected survey information to the USACE for their consideration in a non-attributional format.

Company names and points of contact will not be included.

1. Please describe the types of cargo your company typically moves through the Bayou Sorrel Lock.

Exclusively bulk liquids (Red Flags) - 90% or more

Exclusively dry cargo - 90% or more

2. On average, how many transits per year does your company make through the Bayou Sorrel Lock?

3. On average, what percentage of these transits require you to "break tow" and use an assist boat to complete multiple transits through the lock to accommodate a single tow?

4. On average, how much additional time (delay) and expense (assist boat costs) are required per lockage to break tow and use an assist boat?

5. The current lock dimensions are 56 ft x 800 ft and the proposed new dimensions are 1,200 ft x 75 ft. How will the increased lock dimensions impact your operations (i.e. what percentage of your annual tow transits would require breaking tow and using an assist boat with a 1,200' X 75' lock?)
