Volunteer Coaching Application


2023-24 Season

Thank you for your interest in coaching for the Peaks Youth Hockey Association.


Please read over the coaching requirements, responsibilities, and policies outlined below before submitting your application. Filling out this application will not guarantee that you will be selected as a coach; coaches will be selected based on their qualifications, program needs, and at the discretion of Peaks staff.


The Provo Predators will have new designations for teams in the 2023-24 season. We will continue to have Travel A teams, but next season we will have Travel B teams (which will replace the D1 category) and in-house teams (which will replace the D2 category).


The Provo Predators will field one team per bracket, per division in Travel A and Travel B.


If you would like to apply as a Travel A or Travel B coach, please apply by March 31st.

In-house coaches, apply by August 12th.

COACHING REQUIREMENTS


Prospective coaches should be prepared to complete the 5 steps below once selected as a coach.

No coach will be able to step on the ice to coach until the first 4 requirements are completed. Coaches who fail to complete the following requirements may be replaced by other volunteer coaches.



1.REGISTER with USA Hockey as a coach https://membership.usahockey.com/register/age

  • must re-register EVERY year
  • use the same email address if you have registered on USA Hockey before
  • $46 registration fee


2. Complete USA Hockey Safesport Certification https://www.usahockey.com/safesporttraining

  • required every year
  • If you completed Safesport the previous year, you will have a refresher course to complete


3. Complete USA Hockey Background Check https://www.usahockey.com/backgroundscreen

  • needs to be updated every two years
  • $30 fee


4. Complete USA Hockey age-specific modules https://www.usahockey.com/agespecificmodules

  • complete the modules for the age group you will be coaching
  • $10 per module


All coaches must complete Step 5 BEFORE December 15th:


5.Complete USA Hockey Coaching Seminar (CEP) https://www.usahockey.com/coachingclinics

  • Clinics are offered from Apr 5 - Dec 31.
  • If a coach does not complete a clinic by Dec 15th, the coach will not coach the rest of the season.
  • $55 fee

COACHING RESPONSIBILITIES


Head Coach Responsibilities

  Serve as the official spokesperson on behalf of the team

  Coordinate the delegation of responsibilities to the assistant coach(es) and team manager

  Coordinate (or delegate) clear communication channels with parents, including conducting parents information meetings at the beginning of the season and as needed throughout.

  Design the practice plans in consultation with the assistant coach(es)

  Establish rules for the team and oversee the supervision of the players

  Manage games, including pre/post-game coaching, organizing lines, etc.

  Ensure all players register for their USA Hockey membership for the current season; make sure that USA Hockey numbers are sent to the Youth Hockey Coordinator

  Ensure that all scoresheets are collected and sent to the Youth Hockey Coordinator

  Coordinate scorekeepers and penalty box monitors for games and locker room monitors for both practices and games

  Teach the players in their team the rules of the game, proper sportsmanship, skills, and strategy of the game

  Many of these tasks can be delegated to assistant coaches, managers, or volunteer parents, but it is ultimately the responsibility of the head coach to make sure all of these elements of the team management are taken care of

  In accordance with Safe Sport, act as a mandatory reporter

  Report any concussion of a player to the Youth Hockey Coordinator and fill out a USA Hockey concussion form within 24 hours of the incident

  Promote a fun, safe learning environment that helps grow the game of hockey

  Participate in ALL PYHA coaching meetings prior to and throughout the season

  Attend 90% of team practices and games


Assistant Coach Responsibilities

  Complete tasks delegated by the Head Coach

  Act as Head Coach for the rare games or practices that the Head Coach cannot personally attend

  Assist with planning, organizing and conducting practices

  Assist with pre-game preparation

  Assist with the operation of the team during the games, as delegated from the Head Coach

  Assist with the supervision of players off and on the ice

  Assist with the formulation of the game plan and strategy, under the Head Coach’s supervision

  In accordance with Safe Sport, act as additional mandatory reporter

  Help promote a fun, safe learning environment that helps grow the game of hockey

  Teach the players in their team the rules of the game, proper sportsmanship, skills, and strategy of the game

  Participate in ALL PYHA coaching meetings prior to and throughout the season

  Attend 75% of team practices and games
