Download the first chapter of Keep Breathing: A Psychologist's Intimate Journey Through Loss, Trauma, and Rediscovering Life

An excerpt from my book:

This book is my story of moving through the depths of darkness that consumed me in the years after my fiance suddenly passed away, just one week before our wedding. It's an account of the years of trauma I endured long before my fiance's death. It's a neuroscientific examination of how the brain uses our past to inform the present. Part autobiography and part scientific exploration, this book uses my story as a case study to illuminate the common experiences in the human brain—deep love and devastating loss, exhilaration and pain, life and death—that have the power to both derail our lives and build our empowered features.

Ultimately, this story is meant to help you tap into the process of the phoenix journey. I want people to know they have the opportunity to heal. My deepest desire for this book is for people to move into understanding, empathy, and compassion for how their past impacts the way they are living and to help others—you—learn to be proactive in finding opportunities for empowerment and strength, even in our darkest moments. Our brains carry within them the capacity to heal; sometimes, we just don't know it.

With warmth and healing,

Kate
