The day of the book launch started in a rush.

I was fighting with the printer, trying to get everything just right, when my daughter came into my office holding the children's book The Rabbit Listened, and asked me to read it.

I was rushing so I told her to go ask Grandma. She adamantly said, “No, Mama read it.”

So I stopped.

I sat down on the couch and read with her.

In that small pause, I remembered: this is what Play Therapy Documentation Essentials is about — helping clinicians stay grounded in heart, in play, and in presence, even when the world asks for speed and solutions.

Later that afternoon at the book launch party, the room filled with colleagues, family, friends and their children. People of all generations making bookmarks, mentors and mentees crafting side by side.

I had planned to read the book’s introduction, but when I was joined at the podium by two children, I pivoted.

I read The Rabbit Listened instead.

It slowed us down. It brought the children — the reason for all of this — into the center of the room. It spoke to the heart of the work.

The book is out in the world now. It’s launched.

Thank you for listening, for trusting, and for allowing the children to remind you to stay connected to yourself and to the work.

With love,

Rosie

The Rabbit Listened by Cori Doerrfeld

This is a simple, profound story about what it means to be present with someone who’s hurting — not to fix, teach, or cheer them up, but to listen.

It captures the essence of what we strive for in child-centered play therapy: staying with the child, trusting their pace, and allowing healing to unfold through connection.
