| In the Lower Flint River Basin of Georgia, farmers participating in the Drought SWAP program have withdrawal permits for irrigation that specify when source switching from their surface water withdrawal to their groundwater withdrawal is required. Source switching to groundwater is required – and limited to – periods when the daily average flow level falls below the 10th percentile flow calculated on a monthly basis. The 10th percentile flow threshold is set at a nearby USGS gage and is based on the full period of record for that gage. Use of the groundwater well must continue until flows exceed the daily flow threshold. The current flow status at the seven USGS flow gages in the Lower Flint River Basin that are referenced in Drought SWAP permits can be found at https://ga-fit.org/flint-river/. Permittees should consult their individual permits to know which gage applies to their specific withdrawal.
