In the fall of 2022, students from the Florida State University’s (FSU) Department of Urban and Regional Planning (DURP) program as part of the Mark & Marianne Barnebey Planning and Development Lab began identifying legacy communities in Gadsden County. Lead by Dennis J. Smith, AICP, Planner-in-Residence in FSU’s Department of Urban and Regional Planning & Director of the Mark and Marianne Barnebey Planning and Development Lab, the goal of the project was to document these communities, the stories of their residents, and important institutions. Learn how these students traveled through Gadsden County collecting data and interviewing residents and community leaders. Together, they compiled an informational booklet about the 25 legacy communities identified as well as an e-chamber of commerce where business owners could list their businesses for the community to easily find.
