| About the Program: Does "Jewish" refer to an ethnicity? A religion? A people? Something else? In this talk, participants will be invited to consider some of the many ways of being Jewish in today's world. Sarah Leiter will guide this exploration of Jewishness by drawing on her ethnographic research among Sephardic descendants in New Mexico, Black Hebrew-Israelites in Chicago, and prospective converts to Judaism in Brazil.
About the Speaker: Dr. Sarah Leiter, PhD, is a 2025-2026 fellow at the Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. She received her PhD in sociocultural and linguistic anthropology from the University of New Mexico, where she researched identity and narratives among New Mexicans of Sephardic descent.
