| Improving School-Home Communication to Build Bridges with Families
Workshop Description:
Family Engagement is about relationships. But before we can partner with families, they have to understand what we're talking about, and we need to communicate in ways that respect their expertise. Sometimes the language we use with families is full of jargon. They can find our authoritative tone alienating and can feel overwhelmed by the information we provide. This can cause them to tune us out/disengage. This workshop gives participants tips and tools they can use immediately to improve their school-home communication and build relationships with families.
Workshop Learning Outcomes:
Participants in the workshop will:
- Understand why family engagement in education is important.
- Understand why effective two-way communication is at the heart of effective family engagement.
- Be able to recognize and identify both effective and ineffective communication for families.
- Draw on the knowledge of parents/schools to compose and design communications and activities that are parent-friendly.
- Use a self-assessment to evaluate their own school-home communication.
