December 1 - Virtual Workshop : Beyond Talk, Text, & Using Smartphones to Support Lifelong Learning


This workshop is for users of any smartphone, tablet or PC technology. Although we will is used to help them stay connected. And soon they venture to photos, email and an occasional internet search. But we all understand that our smartphones are capable of so much more.  

Lifelong learning has become more critical than ever in our rapidly changing world. And it is not just for jobs and careers. Having the ability to learn can simply make life more satisfying and fulfilling. This workshop will explore using technology to up your learning game? 

This workshop will explore five of the best of learning approaches as delivered by smartphones, tablets and PCs. Through discussion and demonstration of multiple apps, you will learn about these five avenues to learning:

  1. eBooks - We’ll look at using your technology to read books. And we will show you how to access a lifetime of reading for free!.
  2. Podcasts - Podcasts are the new radio where you can listen and learn from millions of programs, all on your time. 
  3. Learning Platforms - A review of some of the best online learning sites including tips to access some of the best for free.
  4. Video - Need to learn a skill? You name a topic and you can likely find an online video to assist you. The key skill is to be able to search for the topics you need. And the vast majority are free.

In each of the categories, we will define the opportunity and platform, recommend apps, resources and content sources. We will put a special emphasis on approaches most appropriate for the SHIFT community. We also consider affordability in our recommendations.  

You will leave this session with information that will allow you to better explore and learn with the support of your technology. And we’ll share across the SHIFT community to learn what other SHIFTers are doing to support lifelong learning.

Don Frederiksen is the founder and principal of the, the online club that helps older adults stay connected and engaged by learning, sharing and exploring technology. Don could be a Shift poster child with his encore experience.

After 35 years working as a computer trainer, data analyst, developer and IT leader, his position was terminated in 2017 due to a corporate acquisition. He learned about Shift during his outplacement exploration.  The continues to be a work in progress with a mission to help older adults be active lifelong learners.

Don started his professional career as a school band director, discovered personal computers in the early 80’s, and never looked back. He traveled the country teaching IT professionals, started two companies and led corporate IT teams. He has a BS from the University of Minnesota and an MBA from the University of St Thomas. He lives in St Anthony, MN.

Once you click on the button below and register, you will see both a confirmation page AND our booking system will send you a confirmation message to the email you used to register with us.

Step Two: The Zoom link contained on the confirmation or in the confirmation email will take you to a second page, which is the registration process for our Zoom Virtual Conference Platform which will ask you to re-enter your name and email to confirm. That second registration will generate a meeting invitation email which contains your UNIQUE MEETING LINK AND PASSCODE that will allow you to log-in to the meeting/call/workshop at the appointed time.

Yes, we realize that a double registration process can be a bit frustrating, however this addition step is to protect our virtual meeting from uninvited guests gaining access to the online classroom and causing any type of nuisance or disruption.

In the event that SHIFT cancels a program, you’ll receive a refund of your registration payment.

SHIFT will not issue credits or refunds in the following circumstances:

  • You cancel your registration
  • You register but do not attend
  • You attend but leave early
  • You do not attend all sessions of a multi-session course
