An anabranch is a portion of a river or stream that diverts—that is, branches off from—the main channel but then rejoins it again downstream. At Anabranch Recovery Center, we believe this is a useful way to think about treatment for a substance use disorder. Think of your day-to-day life, with all of its joys and challenges, as the main channel of your experience. If drugs or alcohol are polluting that primary channel, it is time to get help. When you make a decision to seek help and go through detoxification and rehabilitation in a residential setting, you are creating a new branch in your river. For a period of time you are following a different path—an anabranch. But the key thing to remember is this: an anabranch rejoins the main channel after its journey away. And that, of course, is the central goal of recovery—to help you get sober and stay sober so that you can rejoin the main channel of your life free from the influence of drugs or alcohol.
