Introduction to Teaching Information Literacy (8/27/25)

This introduction to teaching information literacy (IL) defines information literacy
as a concept, introduces the ACRL Framework and other IL standards, and reviews
teaching methods. Instructional design concepts will help learners improve their
instruction.

Virtual Trainer: Heather Beirne

Heather Beirne currently serves as Director of Learning & Engagement at Texas A&M University Libraries, where she leads a team of 18 librarians across Learning & Curricular Services, Student Engagement & Outreach, and Online Learning/The Studio. Previously, she was Director of Teaching & Learning at Eastern Kentucky University Libraries, where she coordinated information literacy instruction and reference services. Her research interests include pedagogical innovation in library instruction, faculty-librarian pedagogical partnerships, teaching with the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, and academic library leadership. She holds an MSLS from the University of Kentucky and is an active member of professional library organizations.

These projects were funded either under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act from the Institute of Museum and Library Services or the Library Cooperative Grant program. Florida’s LSTA and LCG programs are administered by the Department of State’s Division of Library and Information Services.

For FY2024-25, the total state and federal budgets for NEFLIN's programs are $703,693. 43% of the total costs ($303,693) are supported by federal funds, and 57% of this program ($400,000) is supported by state funds.
