Course Description: This course will cover the most recent ADA, AHA and ASOT guidelines for the appropriate use of antibiotic prophylaxis in the setting of dental and oral surgical practice. A discussion on the importance of antibiotic stewardship in dental practice in the setting of antimicrobial overuse, rising bacterial resistance to antibiotics and increasing frequency of adverse reactions to antibiotic administration will be generated. The over-diagnosis of penicillin allergy in medical and dental practice will also be discussed.

Course Objectives:

• Increase awareness among dentists and oral surgeons of the importance of antibiotic stewardship in modern practice to effect better and more judicious prescribing practices.
• Understand the updated guidelines on the very restricted list of patients that truly require antibiotic prophylaxis before dental procedures.
• Appreciate that patient self-reported penicillin allergy is often inaccurate and that beta lactam therapy can often be prescribed safely in most cases

About the Speaker:

Dr. Trevor J. Slom, MD, is a board-certified infectious disease specialist having practiced for 35 years in both academic and private settings. He currently works in a busy seven physician hospital-based infectious disease practice in Arlington Heights, IL. He has a particular interest in antibiotic stewardship, particularly as it pertains to overuse of these drugs in clinical practice. He received his medical school training at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa and completed his residency in St Louis, MO and infectious disease fellowship at Northwestern University in Chicago.
