Science Cafe - Uncertain Sanctuary

5:00PM - Gallery Opening and Social at the Museum (earlier time!)
6:00PM - Presentation at the RELC

Join us for the opening of our new exhibit, Uncertain Sanctuary, which focuses on Florida's springs. In her series of bronze and kiln-cast glass sculptures, artist Judith Greavu captures the intricate and delicate ecology of these beautiful sanctuaries.

Director of the Florida Springs Council Ryan Smart will present about the environmental challenges facing our springs.

This Science Cafe is co-sponsored by Stetson's Institute for Water and Environmental Resilience.

No registration is required to attend the gallery opening from 5-6PM; however, due to space limitations registration is required for the presentation following the gallery opening!

The gallery opening and social begin at an earlier time this month (5-6PM) to allow visitors extended time to enjoy the new exhibit. At 6PM, the lecture in the RELC will start off with a short artist's statement followed by the presentation by Director Smart about the issues facing our springs.

Judith Greavu grew up in Volusia County and her early experiences with nature had a lasting influence on her sculptures. Her first visit to Juniper Springs at 7 years old initiated her fascination with Florida's springs. Judith received her MFA from Bowling Green State University and is retired from teaching at Ohio Northern University. Her academic studies and teaching career have kept her in Indiana and Ohio for many decades, but Florida remains a strong inspiration in her work.

Ryan Smart took the helm as FSC's first Executive Director after having served as the Director of the Florida Conservation Coalition and President of 1000 Friends of Florida. He holds a Master's in Water Policy & Public Administration from the University of Florida, where he was honored for his environmental advocacy work as the 2017 University of Florida Bob Graham Center Young Floridian of the Year. The Florida Springs Council is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that advocates for Florida's springs and spring-fed waterways through litigation, education, and legislation. Their mission is to build the power, influence, and resources of springs advocates across the state to protect Florida's springs now and for future generations.
