| Update 4/24/2026: Due to construction adjacent to the upper portion of the Alton Baker Canoe Canal, we have changed the specific location of this class within Alton Baker Park. Participants should instead park in the primary lot of Alton Baker Park (200 Day Island Road) and gather on the canal just up the walking path. We will mark the path with a Willamette Riverkeeper sign, and our canoe trailer should be unmissable!
Ready to dip your paddle into something new? Join Willamette Riverkeeper for a fun, hands-on paddling class designed for beginners and those looking to refresh their canoe skills! This free 5-hour class combines land-based instruction with a guided paddle along Eugene’s scenic Alton Baker Canoe Canal, led by the WRK on-water recreation team. The Alton Baker Canoe Canal (see map below) is calm, protected, and shallow flatwater, making it a great opportunity to get on the water for those who don't have previous experience paddling.
You’ll Learn:
- Canoe safety & equipment basics
- How to safely enter and exit your boat
- Efficient paddling techniques (forward, reverse, sweep, draw & pry strokes)
- How to steer & maneuver in calm water
- River etiquette, safety, and Leave No Trace principles
All paddling gear is provided, including canoes, paddles, and PFDs. Dress for the weather and bring lunch, water, sunscreen, and your sense of adventure!
– Ages 12+ welcome (minors must be accompanied by an adult) – No paddling experience necessary – Pre-registration is required, and space is limited – don’t wait!
Let’s build confidence, connection, and community on the Willamette Water Trail!
