SAME Rock Island January Joint Post Meeting - Dr. Juan Quiroz - Thermal Study of LD25 Monoliths

Dr. Juan E. Quiroz is a seasoned structural engineer with over 28 years of experience in the design, analysis, and construction of complex civil infrastructure projects worldwide. As a Principal at Stantec, he has led and contributed to major initiatives involving dams, hydroelectric power plants, navigation locks, tunnels, pumping stations, and underground facilities. His expertise spans seismic and dynamic analysis, soil-structure interaction, and advanced finite element modeling, particularly for high-hazard and critical infrastructure.

Dr. Quiroz holds a Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he also served for 7 years as an adjunct professor. He earned his M.S. and B.S. in Civil Engineering from Universidad Nacional de Colombia. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in California and an active member of the United States Society on Dams.

His portfolio includes landmark projects such as the Folsom Dam Raise in California, the Panama Canal Expansion, Diamer Basha Dam in Pakistan, Warragamba Dam in Australia, and numerous dam safety upgrades and seismic assessments across the U.S. and internationally. He has authored multiple technical papers and presented at leading industry conferences.

Presentation Description:

The analysis aimed to evaluate the thermal and structural behavior of six monolith configurations for the new 1,200-ft lock at L&D25. This was done through a Level 3 thermal study and nonlinear incremental structural analysis (NISA) to assess stress and deformation responses during construction. The study followed guidelines from USACE Engineering Manuals and Technical Letters, as well as ACI standards.

Construction uses a box-form method with alternating A-forms and B-forms, incorporating underwater tremie lifts followed by dry mass concrete placements. A total of 80 different cases were analyzed, including variables such as:

 *  Two construction start dates (summer/winter)

 *  Different lift and tremie heights

 *  Material property combinations (MPC1, MPC2, MPC3)

 *  Time between placements (5 or 10 days)
