Legislative forum: The safety of health care in Massachusetts

It has been 30 years since Betsy Lehman, a Boston Globe health journalist, died from an overdose of chemotherapy during treatment for breast cancer. Her death catalyzed a national patient safety movement and led to the creation of a state agency in her name to support safety improvement in Massachusetts.

The Betsy Lehman Center for Patient Safety will release its annual report to the Legislature and Governor Healey at a forum sponsored by Senator Cindy Friedman and Representative John Lawn at the Massachusetts State House on January 29, 2025, at 2:30 p.m. in Room 428.

A panel of state and federal experts will discuss past progress, persistent challenges, and opportunities to reduce preventable harm in health care through technology-enabled approaches.

Panelists:

  • Abha Agrawal, M.D., President and CEO, Lawrence General Hospital
  • Michelle Anderson, R.N., Patient advocate
  • Isabelle (Izzy) Lopes, M.S.W., M.P.H., Vice President of Health Equity, Massachusetts Health and Hospital Association
  • Kiame Mahaniah, M.D., Undersecretary of Health, Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services

The event is free and open to the public. Registration is recommended but not required.
