Recognizing and Managing Eating Disorders in Pediatric Practice: Early Detection, Intervention, and Referral

Objectives: 

  • Identify early warning signs of eating disorders (including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder) across different pediatric age groups.
  • Conduct brief, sensitive screening during routine visits using validated tools and developmentally appropriate language.
  • Recognize medical complications of eating disorders and understand when urgent intervention is needed.
  • Outline referral pathways to specialized care and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams (mental health providers, nutritionists, schools).
  • Differentiate normal developmental eating behaviors from clinically concerning patterns that may signal an eating disorder.
  • Engage families in supportive, non-stigmatizing conversations about eating behaviors, weight concerns, and body image.
  • Apply strategies for monitoring progress and providing ongoing support to patients and families within the pediatric setting.
  • Explain the importance of nutrition in the medical stabilization and recovery of children and adolescents with eating disorders.
  • Identify key nutritional challenges and complications (such as refeeding syndrome, deficiencies, and growth concerns) encountered during treatment.
  • Describe the pediatrician’s role in a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to nutritional rehabilitation, including collaboration with dietitians, therapists, and families.

Meet our Speakers

Dr. Renee Morgan, MD


Dr. Renee Morgan is an Adolescent Medicine Specialist at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, Florida. She is board-certified in both Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine and brings extensive experience in caring for adolescents with a focus on eating disorders, reproductive health, and the transition from childhood to adulthood.


Dr. Morgan earned her medical degree from the University of the West Indies, completed her pediatric residency and adolescent medicine fellowship at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, and pursued advanced training in Adolescent Medicine at The Hospital for Sick Children/University of Toronto.


Dedicated to providing compassionate, culturally responsive, and evidence-based care, Dr. Morgan is passionate about helping young people feel understood, heard, and valued as they navigate the challenges of adolescence.

Dr. Kelli Malkasian, MD


Dr. Kelli Malkasian is a licensed Clinical Psychologist and Certified Eating Disorder Specialist and Consultant. She has over 20 years of experience treating clients with eating disorders. Prior to starting her private practice in 2016, Dr. Kelli held many clinical and directorial positions for 12 years at eating disorder specific treatment programs offering residential, PHP and IOP levels of care.


Currently, she is the owner of Coral Reef Counseling, a private practice in Fort Lauderdale and treats both teens and adults with eating disorders and other related concerns, as well as, supervises and consults for clinicians and programs around the country who are looking to become certified specialists or improve eating disorder informed care in their practices or programs.  In her downtime (haha) she is the proud mom of two kids ages 6 and 15 and enjoys boating, yoga and audio books. 

Samantha Wint, MPH, RDN, LDN


Samantha Wint is a Registered and Licensed Dietitian. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Dietetics and Nutrition from Florida International University and a master’s degree in Public Health from Kaplan University. She has close to two decades of experience providing nutrition therapy for eating disorders throughout all levels of care.


As the Director of Nutrition at the Renfrew Center of Florida, she oversees all aspects of nutrition care for the department. She facilitated several nutrition webinars on topics ranging from nutrition considerations for black women with eating disorders to nutrition challenges on college campuses. She authored an article titled navigating stuck-ness in Perspectives a professional journal published by The Renfrew Center Foundation for the eating disorder treatment community. She is passionate about guiding individuals on their journey to better health.
