Description: This course examines the full assembly of exterior wall systems, focusing on how material selection, detailing, and system coordination influence performance, durability, aesthetics, and cost. The seminar explores best practices for specifying sheathing, air and weather barriers, attachment systems, and a range of cladding materials, including fiber cement, metals, phenolics, ceramics, granite, exterior plasters, and terra cotta. Participants will also evaluate the cost implications of various facade systems and how early design decisions impact long-term value.
Learning Objectives: 1.Evaluate the performance and constructability benefits of integrated sheathing systems within modern facade assemblies.
2.Identify sources of thermal bridging in rainscreen facade systems, assess the extent of thermal loss associated with various facade attachment methods, and apply strategies to reduce energy performance impacts.
3.Compare high-density and medium-density fiber cement facade materials by examining manufacturing processes, performance characteristics, durability, and cost considerations.
4.Differentiate between the range of aluminum facade systems, including panel types, fabrication methods, and attachment strategies, and assess how these variables influence aesthetics, performance, and budget.
5.Assess the advantages of steel facade systems with respect to fire resistance, durability, structural performance, and long-term value.
6.Define limestone plaster facade systems and explain their environmental, durability, and moisture-management benefits, including breathability, mold and mildew resistance, and contribution to healthy building envelopes. |
