| Our hosts will be Kathy Hovell and her nephew Bill Hovell. For the past several years, Bill has been restoring bluff prairies at the farm, as well as oak savannas and woodlands. With each year of his work, he sees new native species that he hadn't seen before, species that are able to thrive following his restoration efforts.
The Prairie Enthusiasts' Ecologist, Dan Carter, has been to the farm to map and characterize the plant communities, identify and record species of conservation interest, and produce a recommended management plan. We'll have copies of that report and plan available for participants to examine during the field trip.
Field trip participants can keep an eye out for any species Dan and Bill haven't already recorded on the growing species list, and there will be many discussions about prescribed burning, invasive species control, and canopy thinning.
Date, Time and Location Sunday, October 11 - 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Hovell Family Farm at N20828 Hovell Ln in Galesville, WI 54630 (MAP HERE)
The terrain will involve walking on moderate to steep logging roads to get to some of the restoration sites, and some parts of the bluff prairies are steep while other parts are moderately-sloped. Field trip participants are free to enjoy areas of the field trip sites where the terrain is more suitable for their needs, while the rest of the group explores other areas.
What to Bring All participants should be prepared for insects (ticks will likely still be out), sun or clouds or drizzle, and heat or cold - October can be hard to predict. Participants should also bring drinks and snacks to keep their bodies happy and healthy.
