2026 Spring Pain Assessment and Management for Nurses

This course provides nurses with the foundational knowledge and skills to understand and apply effective pain assessment and management in the context of a palliative approach to care. This course is designed for NPs, RNs, and RPNs working in any setting in the Halton/Peel region.

Program Expectations:

To receive a Certificate of Completion, learners will need to:
- Attend both full-day in-person sessions on May 21 and June 18 from 8:45AM to 4:15PM
- Successfully complete two written practical assignments

Course Learning Objectives:

·      Define and describe pain in the context of whole person care

·      Identify barriers to effective pain management

·      Complete a comprehensive pain assessment

·      Differentiate between different types of pain

·      Describe the principles of pharmacological and non-pharmacological management of pain

·      Describe opioid and non-opioid medications used in managing pain

·      Apply conversion ratios between different opioids and routes of administration

·      Manage common adverse effects of opioids

·      Evaluate the effectiveness of pain management interventions

 

Disclaimer: This course does not focus on chronic primary pain. However, there are some similar guiding principles in pain assessment and management in the context of caring for someone with a life-limiting illness.
