Ann's Garden (Garden #1)

Over the last ten years, I’ve dedicated my efforts to eradicating invasive species and reimagining my lawn into what I call my Native Plant Cottage Garden. This space features a variety of raised and terraced beds, all filled with drought-tolerant native plants that bloom across three seasons. My primary focus has been on incorporating butterfly caterpillar food plants in the form of trees and shrubs in the understory and herbaceous perennials in sunny spots. The late fall bloomers, like asters and goldenrods, are essential in my garden: they ensure nectar is available through Thanksgiving. By allowing plants to go to seed each year, I foster processes that enhance the garden’s ecosystem, manage stormwater from winter rains, and support butterfly populations in my arid, rocky yard on Lookout Mountain, Tennessee.

Bob's Garden (Garden #2)

We bought the house in 2010 and started on the yard in 2012. Since then all of the trees on the Richardson side of the 10 East Brow lot have been replaced. The border next to the sidewalk on E. Brow Rd has Cherokee Sedge, Mohr’s Rosinweed, Liatris spicata and ragweed. The beds that right the lawn are various mixes of Tennessee natives and others from farther west depending upon the season. Further back to the west, across the lawn is a created meadow that is slowly becoming a woodlot. A handicap accessible looping path runs through the meadow. We have a water feature with seating and paved paths going to the Greenhouse, raised beds, and the 110 Richardson house with a deck and shade. In year three I counted the species of things growing and came up with 172. I suspect that is diminished now as not everything I have planted has liked living here.
