| Professor Joseph Carter Corbin was a visionary educator, scholar, linguist, mathematician, musician, and public servant whose work forever changed the educational landscape of Arkansas. In 1873, he founded Branch Normal College, now the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB), establishing Arkansas's first historically Black college or university and laying the foundation for what would become the state's designated 1890 land-grant institution.
Corbin also served as Arkansas State Superintendent of Public Instruction during Reconstruction, becoming one of the state's highest-ranking African American public officials. His unwavering belief that education could transform lives continues to inspire generations of students, educators, and leaders.
