How to Protect Clients from Cyber Fraud

The first thoughts that often come to one’s mind at the mention of scams, are those of theft through threats, fear, and coercion. However, increasingly we are seeing trust, friendship, and promises being used by bad actors in misleading ways to exploit financial service consumers. We welcome the opportunity to share our observations of trends and patterns, in an effort to spread awareness of the threats we all face in our current social and technological environment.

Tate Gordinier, Financial Institutions Examiner, California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation

Tate Gordinier is a Financial Institutions Examiner who has been with the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation for the past 7 years. He graduated with from CSU Chico with a Bachelor of Science degree with an emphasis in Accounting in 2017, and has been a licensed CPA in California since 2021. Prior to his transition to the accounting field, Tate had a varied career in manufacturing and the Pacific Northwest timber industry. 

He finds fulfilment from his work in protecting consumers and being of service to the DFPI's licensees as they navigate the regulatory landscape of California. In his free time he enjoys anything he can do outdoors, particularly overlanding, off-road motorsports, and exploring the remote ghost towns of California and Nevada.

Brett O’Sullivan, Manager, California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation’s Sacramento Office

Brett O’Sullivan is a Manager in the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation’s Sacramento Office. He has worked at the Department since 2005 in the Investment Adviser/Broker-Dealer unit, where he specializes in areas involving security valuation and unsuitable investments.

Mr. O’Sullivan graduated from California State University, Chico, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, with an emphasis in Accounting and Finance. He has been a licensed CPA in California since 2010, and a Certified Fraud Examiner since 2018.
