Whose Independence? Black Freedom Dreams and the Multiple Founding's of America

As America nears its 250th anniversary, this lecture and panel discussion brings historians together to explore how Black Virginians have continually reshaped democracy—from the Revolutionary War to the Civil Rights era and beyond. Drawing on ideas of “wake work” and “abolition democracy,” the program reflects on 250 years of liberty and bondage and considers how Black freedom dreams can guide a more inclusive future.
