WHAT: Join Willamette Riverkeeper, Oregon Parks & Recreation Department and friends to help plant newly harvested aquatic native plants, Wapato (Sagittaria latifolia), on Mission Lake at Willamette Mission State Park. We will come together to plant this important native species in designated areas around the site to improve habitat, water quality, overall watershed health, and restore this culturally significant plant to the river. After planting, we will construct temporary fencing using wooden poles and jute netting to protect the tubers from herbivory. If you love the river, plants, and getting your hands dirty, then this is the perfect event for you!

We need your help to improve the Willamette's aquatic habitat!

WHEN: Sunday, November 16, 2025 from 10:00am - 2:00pm

WHERE: We will meet at the parking area next to the Wheatland Ferry, off of N. Matheny Rd, and get folks checked in. From there we will do introductions, explain the flow of the day and our project goals. This event is all about community building, education, restoring our aquatic habitats and enjoying a beautiful day in the park. We will probably be getting muddy and wet so be prepared!

See map below for directions to the parking area.

Reserve a spot, and make a new friend!

DETAILS: Dress for the weather and a day in the mud; you will probably get muddy. Taller muck boots would be ideal, and waders would be even better if you have them. Please bring plenty of water, lunch and snacks, and sunscreen. Willamette Riverkeeper will have tools, gloves, and all the instruction needed. If you do have your favorite hand trowel, then feel free to bring it along. We will be planting wapato tubers in the mud along the shoreline of Mission Lake, and then we will be constructing simple fences around these tubers to protect them from hungry beavers and nutria. This activity will involve kneeling, bending down, and sticking your hands in the mud.

Minors are also welcome to join this event if they will be accompanied by an adult who is responsible for the minor and is authorized to sign their participation waiver.
