Patrick Calhoun, PhD

President & Chief Science Officer, Nanocrine, Inc.

Dr. Patrick Calhoun is a cell biologist with a background in viral pathogenesis and molecular cardiology. He received his Ph.D. from the Department of Biological Sciences at Virginia Tech and held an appointment as a postdoctoral fellow in the Cardiology Department at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. His company utilizes nanofabrication methods commonly used in the semiconductor industry to create novel biosensors for life science research. Prior to pursuing his current career, he enlisted as a US Army infantryman and conducted combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Amanda Corbel, MS, PMP

Senior Manager, Innovation and Partnerships, Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research

Amanda Corbel is the Senior Manager, Innovation and Partnerships at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research (FNLCR), the only national exclusively devoted to biomedical research. She supports the FNLCR’s mission to accelerate progress against cancer and AIDS by creating strategic partnerships between the lab’s scientists and external research communities. Corbel is also the Federal Laboratory Consortium (FLC) Mid-Atlantic Regional Coordinator and Federal Laboratory Education Accelerator (FLEX) Program Manager. She holds a B.S. in Biology from Shepherd University and a M.S. in Biotechnology and Business Management from Mount Saint Mary’s University. She is also a certified Project Management Professional through the Project Management Institute. She is currently pursuing her PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Miami – Miller School of Medicine.

Michael L. Salgaller, Ph.D.

Supervisor, Technology Analysis and Marketing Unit (TAMU), Technology Transfer Center, National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health

Dr. Michael Salgaller leads the Technology Analysis and Marketing Unit (TAMU) within the NCI’s Technology Transfer Office, where he leverages over 20 years of business, scientific, and investment experience in various life science sectors to support technology development and commercialization. The TAMU serves in a business development role to foster licensing and collaborative activity between buy-side stakeholders and the NIH. Immediately prior to returning to NIH, Michael was a Vice President at The Conafay Group, a healthcare-focused government affairs firm in downtown DC, where he led alliance development activities centered on civilian health. He served as President of Biologics Consulting Group, a boutique firm providing professional services focused on regulatory affairs. Michael spent several years on the investment team of an early-stage venture capital firm dedicated to the life sciences. He began his buy-side career as Vice President of R&D for Northwest Biotherapeutics, where he led the development of cancer cell therapies that achieved clinical benefit. He began his career as a Senior Scientist at the NIH. Despite many interesting positions, his favorite job was working a summer at the Pittsburgh Zoo feeding hot dogs to polar bears. He is the author of “Biotechnology Entrepreneurship,” and teaches an entrepreneurship class at NIH. He has written over 70 scientific/business articles and book chapters. Dr. Salgaller received his PhD in Pathology from The Ohio State University.

Edward E. Diehl, PhD
Commercialization Officer, Defense Health Agency - Medical Technology Transfer

Dr. Eddie Diehl is a commercialization officer in the Office of Research and Technical Applications (ORTA)/Medical Technology Transfer for the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC). His roles include technology ideation, evaluation, protection and commercialization with a focus on business start-ups and an emphasis on therapeutics, vaccines and diagnostics. Eddie has more than 25 years of experience evaluating and developing life science technologies. He has held two faculty positions: assistant professor of natural and health sciences at Barry University and research assistant professor at the Northwestern University School of Medicine. He was subsequently hired as a senior scientist in the diagnostic division of Abbott Laboratories and contributed to the validation and launch or re-launch of seven cancer diagnostic tests on three instrument platforms. Eddie moved on to entrepreneurial roles at several start-ups and academic institutions, where he participated in R&D, investment, licensing, and business and intellectual property development efforts. He founded the Diehl Group LLC, a life science consulting firm, which became Pathway Biotechnology in 2018. He holds a BS in biology from Pennsylvania State University and a Ph.D. in physiology and biophysics from the University of Iowa.
