Staying Compliant: Infection Control and the 2025 California Dental Practice Act

This course fulfills both the California Law and Infection Control requirements for re-licensure (dental, dental hygiene, dental assisting). It ensures that dental professionals understand and comply with the regulations and statutes governing the practice of dentistry, as required by California law. Violations can result in loss of license, disciplinary actions, or criminal prosecution.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, program attendees should be able to:

• Describe the scope of practice for dentists, dental hygienists, and registered dental assistants in California.

• Describe all the aspects of the licensure process for oral health care providers in California.

• Explain the differences between the law and standard of care relating to dentistry, dental hygiene, and dental

assisting.

• Describe the mandated reporter requirements for child abuse and elder abuse.

• Discuss the ethical responsibilities of a licensed oral health care professional in California.

• Discuss the minimum standards for infection control as required by the DBC and DHBC

• Describe the OSHA and Cal/OSHA regulations as they apply to dentistry

• List the potential pathogens and the modes of transmission that can result in infections acquired in a

dental practice setting

• Discuss the strategies for preventing disease transmission in the dental practice setting

• Describe the various strategies for dental healthcare workers to stay healthy in the workplace

Cathy Draper

Catherine Draper, MS, RDH


Cathy is currently a member of the adjunct faculty at Foothill and Cabrillo Colleges and has over 45 years of clinical practice experience. Cathy has presented continuing education programs nationally and internationally on various topics, including oropharyngeal cancer, dental implants, and infection control. She has contributed to several publications, including two dental hygiene textbooks, and is the current managing editor of the Journal of Dental Hygiene. In addition to her years of service to the dental hygiene profession, Cathy was a library reference associate at the Stanford Hospital Health Library, assisting patients and their families to access scientifically based health information for 25 years. She received the Stanford Healthcare Volunteer of the Year Award in 2015, the University of Michigan Outstanding Dental Hygiene Alumnae Award in 2017, and the ADHA Award for Excellence in Dental Hygiene in 2020.
