WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
The NHANRS Summer Soil Workshop at Bear Brook offers a hands on exploration of the landscape, parent materials, and soil characteristics that define some of the classic soils in the Merrimack Valley region. Participants will work with USGS topographic maps, LiDAR and NRCS soil maps to understand how parent material influences soil texture, surface stones, subsoil horizons, and particle control sections. Morning sessions will provide a structured review of statewide soil mapping, diagnostic horizons, epipedons, and the updated NRCS Catena Key for New Hampshire, providing a strong foundation for both new and experienced soil professionals. In the afternoon, attendees will head into the field to examine open soil pits along a toposequence, where instructors will guide discussions on soil morphology, horizon identification, and Official Series Descriptions (OSDs). This interactive field component brings classroom concepts into the field, allowing participants to observe real world variability in soils and landforms while refining their identification and interpretation skills. Whether you are a soil scientist, environmental consultant, wetland professional, or simply interested in the geology and soils of New Hampshire, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to deepen your understanding of the landscapes we work in every day.
