Take it Outside State Parks Camp - Pleasant Creek State Recreation Area

July 13 - 17, 2026

Take It Outside State Park Camps are 5-day immersive adventures where campers have the opportunity to explore some of the most amazing places in the state, experience hands-on natural resources education and build outdoor skills that can last a

lifetime. Camp is for students going into fifth through eighth grade.

Camp instructors and group leaders may include licensed teachers, pre-service teachers, college students in Natural Resources programs, and DNR professionals. The days will be packed with activities that incorporate STREAM (science, technology, research, engineering, the arts and math) concepts presented through exciting adventures involving forestry, fisheries, wildlife and ecology. Outdoor skills sessions will foster confidence, teamwork and a desire to spend more time outside.

Take It Outside Level II Camps are designed for 5th-8th grade youth who are ready for deeper dives into adventures that offer higher levels of skills training. These provide a Next Step experience for older youth, along with the opportunity to learn and practice things like:

Fishing - gear, techniques, cleaning, cooking and more

Kayaking - water safety, planning, paddling, recovery, hydrology

Camping skills - navigation, backpacking, fire building, outdoor cooking, LNT

In-depth explorations of habitats specific to the park

Archery and firearm safety with certified instructors

Before the week is over, your camper is likely to begin understanding the interconnectedness of it all and embracing their part in the story.

Tentative Pick-up/Drop-off Location is the South Shelter and final locations will be emailed out prior to camp.

All campers must bring their own lunch, water bottle, and snacks. Water will be available for fill ups throughout the day. Drop-off will be done between 7:45-8:15am and pickup is between 3:30-4pm each day. More specific details will be emailed out prior to camp. Any questions, please contact Anne Riordan at 641-295-6028 or Anne.Riordan@dnr.iowa.gov.
