Joseph Tychonievich is a lifelong lover of plants and gardening. He got his degree in horticulture from Ohio State University and went on to work for specialty rare plant nurseries in Japan and Michigan. Joseph is the author of several books including The Comic Book Guide to Growing Food: Step-by-Step Vegetable Gardening for Everyone. His writing has been published in Fine Gardening, Horticulture, and The New York Times. He is the editor of the North American Rock Garden Society’s quarterly journal. He currently lives and gardens in South Bend, Indiana, with his husband, three cats, and a truly excessive number of plants.

Joseph will be giving two presentations:

1.Plant Science that will make you a better gardener. All to often the best research on how to grow plants effectively never leaves the ivory tower and never gets translated into language average gardeners can understand. In this talk we’ll delve into some of the most interesting research from academic horticulture and plant science and explain how you can put it to use in your garden.

 2. Small Spaces, big ideas. Gardening in small space doesn’t have to be limiting. A small garden can be exciting, creative, beautiful and it takes very little work to maintain. This talk goes through some principles and concepts to help make the most of a garden space and shares some ideas and photos to get you thinking up big, creative ideas for your small garden.

Christine Froehlich is a horticulturist, landscape designer, garden writer and speaker. She helps gardeners create and improve their landscape by showing them how to solve the real problems of beginning a new garden or renovating an existing one. Its not hard to create the garden of your dreams. She began freelancing for a variety of gardening magazines; Fine Gardening, American Gardener, Country Gardens, American Nurseryman, The Upstate Gardeners Journal and also writes a monthly blog – “Gardening with What You Have”

Christine's topic will be Loosen up your landscape style: Melding the wild and the tamed with native plants. You will discover ways to loosen up your style, emulate nature, and incorporate native plants into your landscape. Learn about resilient plant species that foster biodiversity, minimize maintenance, and enrich your outdoor environment, providing habitat for birds, butterflies, and other wildlife. Believe it or not, it’s not that hard to create the garden of your dreams!

Debra Knapke, The Garden Sage, is an avid horticulturalist, teacher, author, and eclectic gardener, who shares her extensive knowledge of sustainable gardening with organizations all across the U.S. As a writer, Knapke has co-authored five gardening books with Alison Beck.

Debra's topic will be Herbs in the Landscape - Sensual Gardens. Herbs allow us to experience the world through our senses. Their beauty, smells, tastes, textures and sounds are often subtle, but welcome in a world where we are bombarded by hyperbole and multi-tasking on a daily basis. Explore the concepts of garden design and "gentle living through herbs" in a presentation that may change your ideas about pleasure in the garden.
