Women in the Wilderness Series |
Deer Lake Outdoor Center's Women in the Wilderness Series is for women, 21 years and up, who are looking to enjoy a new hobby, enhance your outdoor skills, or simply spend time in nature with women of similar interests.
This three-part series includes: Canoeing - Saturday, September 14, 2024 (9am to 1pm) Rock Climbing - Saturday, October 12, 2024 (9am to 4pm) Mountain Biking - Saturday, November 16, 2024 (9am to 1pm)
Try one or all three! Our experienced instructors will guide you through the basics, ensuring you gain the confidence and skills needed to enjoy these rewarding activities. |

Canoeing - Saturday, September 14, 2024
Dive into the world of canoeing with our Beginner Canoeing Class!
What You'll Learn:
- Canoe Basics: Introduction to the parts of the canoe, paddles, and essential gear.
- Safety First: Understanding water safety, proper use of personal floatation devices (PFD), and basic rescue techniques.
- Canoe Handling: Techniques for entering, exiting, and balancing in the canoe.
- Paddling Techniques: Learn the fundamental strokes to effectively maneuver your canoe.
- On-the-Water Practice: Apply what you’ve learned in a controlled environment with hands-on practice.
Class Details:
- Date: Saturday, September 14 (Inclement weather date - Sunday, September 15)
- Duration: 4 hours (9am - 1pm)
- Location: Deer Lake Outdoor Center, 101 Paper Mill Road Killingworth, CT 06419
- What to Bring: Comfortable clothing, water shoes, sun protection, food, and a water bottle. All other equipment will be provided.
- Prerequisites: None – no prior canoeing experience required.
- Cost: $60 (or $200 for our three-part series - canoeing, climbing and biking!)

Rock Climbing - Saturday, October 12, 2024
Go out on a limb and try our Beginner Climbing Class!
What You'll Learn:
- Climbing Basics: Introduction to climbing equipment, various climbing and rappelling techniques, and an overview of types of climbing (focus on top-rope climbing)
- Safety First: Understand climbing safety including site set-up and the proper use of equipment
- Climbing Equipment: Introduction to harnesses, helmets, ropes, belay devices, and carabiners
- Climbing Techniques: Learn the fundamentals of belaying (taking in rope to support the climber) as well as various hand, foot, and body holds used in climbing.
- On-the-Cliff Practice: Apply what you’ve learned in a controlled environment with hands-on practice.
Class Details:
- Date: Saturday, October 12 (Inclement weather date - Sunday, October 13)
- Duration: 7 hours (9am - 4pm)
- Location: Deer Lake Outdoor Center, 101 Paper Mill Road Killingworth, CT 06419
- What to Bring: Comfortable clothing, sneakers, sun protection, food, and a water bottle. All other equipment will be provided.
- Prerequisites: None – no prior climbing experience required.
- Cost: $120 (or $200 for our three-part series - canoeing, climbing and biking!)

Mountain Biking - Saturday, November 16, 2024
Deer Lake is excited to partner with Trek Bicycles for this introductory course!
What You'll Learn:
- Mountain Bike Basics: Introduction to the styles of bikes, their applications and bike maintenance.
- Safety First: Understanding trail etiquette and bike safety equipment.
- Trail Riding Techniques: Learn the fundamentals of riding a mountain bike on the trail
- On-the-Trail Practice: Apply what you’ve learned in a controlled environment with hands-on practice.
Class Details:
- Date: Saturday, November 16th (Inclement weather date - Sunday, November 17th)
- Duration: 4 hours (9 am - 1 pm)
- Location: Deer Lake Outdoor Center, 101 Paper Mill Road Killingworth, CT 06419
- What to Bring: Comfortable clothing, sneakers, sunscreen, food, and a water bottle. All other equipment will be provided. *If you have your own bike please bring it and gain experience with equipment you already have access to!
- Prerequisites: Ability to ride a bike - no prior mountain biking experience required.
- Cost: $60 (or $200 for our three-part series - canoeing, climbing, and biking!)
