This ninety-minute session covers evidence-based approaches for supporting children with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), related disorders, and PANS/PANDAS. Participants will review best-practice treatments including Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Habit Reversal Training (HRT), Comprehensive Behavioral (ComB) treatment for skin picking and hair pulling, and CBIT for tics. The presentation also addresses treatment considerations for PANS/PANDAS and explores how interventions can be adapted across developmental stages and varied symptom presentations. CEs available

DESCRIPTION:

This talk will explain evidence based approaches for supporting children with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Obsessive-Compulsive Related Disorders and Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS) and Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS). Participants will gain an overview of current best-practice treatments, including Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for OCD, Habit Reversal Training (HRT) for Body Focused Repetitive Behaviors, Comprehensive Behavioral (ComB) Treatment for Skin Picking and Hair Pulling Disorders, Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE), and Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention Intervention for Tics (CBIT). This talk will also discuss treatment considerations for PANS/PANDAS which have a variety of symptom presentations. Treatment considerations across different developmental stages will be discussed.


LEARNING OBJECTIVES:


At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and describe at least three evidence-based treatments for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and related disorders.
  • Explain the core components and clinical rationale of Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) in the treatment of OCD.
  • Differentiate and summarize the key components of Habit Reversal Training (HRT), Comprehensive Behavioral (ComB) Treatment for skin picking and hair pulling disorders, Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE), and Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT).
  • Recognize and outline treatment considerations and interdisciplinary approaches for children diagnosed with PANS/PANDAS.



Florida Certification Board recognizes this training for continuing education in the areas of mental health and child welfare.

Isabel is a trauma-informed child and adolescent therapist specializing in OCD, anxiety, and behavior challenges, with advanced training in ERP, TF-CBT, SPACE, and PCIT/PCIT-SM. She co-directs Mighty Minds OCD camp and is dedicated to providing compassionate, evidence-based care to children, teens, and families.


Katherine (Kate) Gibson, Psy.D., ABPP


Dr. Gibson is a Board-Certified Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychologist specializing in CBT, ERP, TF-CBT, PCIT/PCIT-SM, and SPACE, with extensive expertise in treating anxiety, OCD, trauma, and behavioral disorders in children and teens. She founded Parent and Child Psychological Services, leads specialized clinical training, and has developed multiple evidence-based programs, including OCD and Selective Mutism camps.
