ABSTRACT: Requirements are one of the most critical aspects of modern systems development and also one of the least understood. This tutorial will present a comprehensive overview of industry best practices for requirements engineering, covering elicitation, analysis, validation, specification, allocation, and verification. An introduction to model-based techniques for developing requirements will also be provided. Attendees will leave with a thorough understanding of techniques and tools for handling common requirements challenges.

I am excited about leading Saturday’s INCOSE-LA tutorial: Requirements: A Comprehensive Overview. This will be an interactive workshop which will provide you with a comprehensive toolkit for navigating the complexities of requirements development.

In preparation for the tutorial, please download the (free) SEBOK, and skim the section on Systems Requirements Definition. You can also review it online

I also recommend you visit the INCOSE store (https://portal.incose.org/commerce/store), search the product catalog for “requirements” and download:

  • Guide to Needs and Requirements
  • Guide to Writing Requirements
  • Needs and Requirements Manual, version 2
  • Guide to Writing Requirements Summary Sheet

These documents are free to INCOSE members. If you are not an INCOSE member, I recommend you join. The price of these documents alone will pay for your first year membership. When you join, please select “Los Angeles” as your chapter (no additional charge).

For those of you attending in person, the class will be held in the Boardroom, Caltech Hall (tallest building on campus), California Institute of Technology campus, https://www.caltech.edu/map/campus/caltech-hall. The closest parking is the South Wilson Parking Structure, 477 S. Wilson Ave., Pasadena. You may park in any unnamed spot. No permits are required on the weekend. The classroom will be open at approximately 8:30 am.

Zoom information and slides will be provided early Saturday morning. Hardcopies will be available for those attending in person. Please let me know if you have any questions.
