CEI Hub Photovoice Paddle

Join Willamette Riverkeeper for a paddle out to the Critical Energy Infrastructure hub to learn more about one of the major environmental issues facing our city. Located along the Willamette River in northwest Portland, the CEI Hub is a six-mile stretch of industrial land used for the storage of 90% of all liquid fuels used throughout the state of Oregon. We'll discuss the history of this site, the risks that it poses, and different future pathways to a safer Portland.

Event Basics: Join Willamette Riverkeeper for a paddle out to the Critical Energy Infrastructure (CEI) hub! This event is hosted in partnership with Portland State University and paddle participants will take part in a Photovoice project run by a PSU grad student, Lillian Weaver. Lillian is in the Earth, Environment, and Society program and is studying the CEI hub. Photovoice is a visual research method that uses photography and group discussions to learn more about a topic.

More details on the project will be sent when you register. If you have any questions about the project, please contact Lillian Weaver at lilweave@pdx.edu. If you have any questions about paddling logistics, please contact Lee Belowski at lee@willametteriverkeeper.org.

When and Where: Friday, September 25th | 9:00am – 1:00pm

Please meet near the boat ramp at Cathedral Park in the St. John's neighborhood of Portland (8800 N Bradford Street) by 9:00am. Parking is available on site – see the map below for our specific meetup location.

What to Bring:

  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, water, and a snack.
  • Secure footwear that you are comfortable getting wet.

Additional Details:

  • Previous canoeing experience is not required for this event. This is a relatively beginner-friendly portion of the river, and our group will be accompanied by trained safety paddlers who can provide ongoing instruction during the paddle.
  • This event will begin with an on-land safety briefing and brief paddling instruction. We will then cross the channel and spend roughly two hours paddling along the CEI Hub on the west bank of the river. After returning to land, we will spend about an hour in group discussion about our experiences on the water and the photographs we all took at the CEI Hub.
  • This event is part of an ongoing social science research project, and registrants will be asked to review various consent forms prior to their participation.
  • Children (ages 10+) are welcome to attend if accompanied by a responsible parent/guardian.
