Swan Island Beach Bash: Human Access Project & WRK Cleanup (On-Land) 3.28.26

Join Human Access Project and Willamette Riverkeeper for a riverbank cleanup event at Swan Island! This wide, sandy beach located in North Portland has huge potential for community recreation. Together we’ll remove trash and wooded debris from the water’s edge to improve native habitat and increase public access to our beloved Willamette River. Let's build a beach that is safe, accessible and enjoyable for all. Come lend a hand, and Get Dirty for Good with us!

WHAT: Join HAP, WRK, and our incredible volunteers for our first riverside cleanup at Swan Island. Swan Island is one of the only Willamette River access points featuring a natural sand beach (think no stubbed toes!). Unfortunately, a build up of litter and wooded debris has threatened the beach’s native plants and wildlife and made the space feel unfit for public recreation. With the help of our committed volunteers, we will usher in Swan Island’s ecological and recreational revitalization. Removing trash will reduce harmful runoff and improve soil conditions for native plant species, while returning wood debris to the river will support critical juvenile salmon habitat. In addition to these ecological improvements, these efforts will facilitate equitable access, making the riverside feel safe and accessible for people of all ages and abilities.

WHEN & WHERE: Saturday, March 28st, 2026 | 10AM - 12:00PM

Please park and meet at the Face Plant parking lot located at 3110 N Going St, Portland, OR 97217. We will hand out gear and provide a safety briefing before heading as a group to Swan Island Beach. Look for our Willamette Riverkeeper A frame sign.

DETAILS: Please be on time! We will aim to get down to the beach by 10:05 AM. Please dress for the weather, bring water, and wear sturdy closed-toe shoes that you are comfortable getting wet/muddy. We will provide trash bags, gloves, buckets, and trash grabbers.
