“FRIVOLOUS DIVERSIONS:

MUSIC & CARD GAMES IN JANE AUSTEN’S TIME”

PRESENTATIONS

Dr. Lidia Chang

“Frivolity, Foppery and Frank Churchill: The Dangers of Male Music-Making”

In Austen’s England, music-making was an activity rich in social meaning. However, as a multifaceted performance of one’s social class, nationality and gender, music-making had to be managed carefully. Austen’s novels offer a valuable window into the restrictive musical culture of Georgian England, revealing nuances about how different kinds of people were allowed to engage with music.

Dr. Regulus Allen

“Card Playing in Jane Austen’s World”

Drawing on historical and biographical materials, Dr. Allen will discuss why card playing was such an important pastime in Regency England and for Austen’s family. The talk will analyze how Austen chose particular games to illustrate her novels’ themes. Dr. Allen will pay special attention to Austen’s favorite card game, Speculation, featured in Mansfield Park, and she will teach attendees how to play this exciting round game

PRESENTER BIOGRAPHIES

Lidia Chang

Lidia Chang is an Assistant Professor of Music at Colorado College. A flutist and musicologist, her work examines the intersection of gender, literature, print culture, organology and music performance practices in Europe during the long eighteenth century. Her current work focuses particularly on the performance of “gentlemanliness” through music praxis in England’s Georgian era, studying the complicated nexus of class, gender and nationality within that musical culture. Her other scholarly work is concerned with the gendering power of musical instruments, as well as questions of aesthetics, sound ideals, technology, reception history and historical performance practices that influenced musical styles. A versatile musician and well-rounded scholar, Lidia Chang double majored in Flute Performance and Music History at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She went on to earn a Master’s in Historical Performance on the Baroque flute at McGill’s Schulich School of Music, a second Master’s in Historical Musicology at the University of Massachusetts, and a PhD in Musicology from the City University of New York.

Regulus Allen

Regulus Allen is an Associate Professor of English at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. She specializes in British literature of the long eighteenth century and African American literature. She regularly teaches a seminar on Austen Fiction and Film for Cal Poly, and she spoke on this topic for our JASNA Southwest region in December 2017. She served as a JASNA Traveling Lecturer in 2019. She has presented on card playing in Austen’s novels at conferences for the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies (ASECS) and the British Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies (BSECS). She has published an article “Speculation in Mansfield Park” for the Modern Language Association’s volume Approaches to Teaching Austen’s Mansfield Park (2014). She has discussed the card game Speculation for the podcast The Thing About Austen in 2023.
