| Learn from Dakota County Natural Resources staff about their native plant propagation program while touring their new greenhouse production facility at Lebanon Hills Regional Park. Staff will discuss topics such as seed collection and propagation strategies for common and rare plant native plant species, growing strategies, and restoration planting.
The Dakota County Native Plant Propagation Program began in 2017 as a small, grassroots effort to supply local-ecotype plant material for ecological restoration. County staff and volunteers initially grew native plants on windowsills and in temporary hoop houses, focusing on uncommon and locally adapted species that were difficult to source from commercial nurseries. The program steadily grew each year with dedicated help from volunteers at each stage of propagation—from collecting remnant seed to planting plugs.
Completed in 2025, the County’s new 5,000-square-foot greenhouse at Lebanon Hills Regional Park triples production capacity to over 100,000 native plugs per year and provides space for the Dakota County Master Gardeners to propagate plants for their annual sale.
