“A Town on Fire” Documentary Screening & Discussion

Join South Carolina ETV for a special screening of the one-hour documentary "A Town on Fire." The documentary delves into the tragic fire at Cleveland School near Camden on May 17, 1923, that resulted in the loss of 77 lives. This devastating event prompted significant changes in fire safety legislation and building codes across the nation.

Following the screening, a panel of experts and historians will engage in a discussion about the documentary, emphasizing the critical importance of fire protection and safety.

Fire Prevention Week™

This event is part of the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) Fire Prevention Week™, held Oct. 6-12, 2024. Fire Prevention Week™ is an annual observance that emphasizes the importance of fire safety education. Established in 1922 and nationally recognized since 1925, Fire Prevention Week™ commemorates the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which highlighted the need for effective fire safety measures. This year's campaign, “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!™,” focuses on the crucial role of working smoke alarms in preventing fire-related tragedies.

About the Producer

A Town on Fire is produced by South Carolina ETV and with support from the ETV Endowment of South Carolina. The documentary is produced by Shae Winston, a talented multimedia producer at SCETV, whose previous works include Backroad Bites, Our Town, and Palmetto Scene. Winston is dedicated to storytelling and has a passion for exploring significant local issues.

How to Watch

During Fire Prevention Week™, the documentary will be broadcast on ETV-HD on Oct. 10 at 8 p.m., on Oct. 14 at 9 p.m. on the South Carolina Channel, and on Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. on ETV World. A Town on Fire can also be watched on-demand using the free PBS App or on the scetv.org website.
