| The battle for dominance in space is already underway. It is not about who gets to the moon again or who colonizes Mars first. It is a battle for control of satellites, protecting space-based communications, GPS, and information systems, as well as how to utilize Artificial Intelligence (AI) effectively to manage those satellites.
As Col Nathan Iven, acting deputy chief of space operations for cyber and data with the U.S Space Force, put it, “Data and artificial intelligence will play a critical role in maintaining space superiority.”
Protecting space security is relevant to everyone. Space-based GPS is used on the battlefield, to keep commercial aircraft on course, and in our private cars. Nations use satellites for secure communication, but also many people tune into their favorite TV show via satellite. Mapping, weather forecasting, and even accurate time signals for cell phones all depend on satellites. Protecting these space resources is vital to our world economy.
There are already more than 12,000 satellites in orbit, with more being launched every year. In this 60-minute webinar, Valerie Taylor, a PhD candidate at Capitol Tech, will use case studeis and current AI space-related projects to look at AI and its impact on space operations, critical infrastructure, and cybersecurity. Taylor's PhD research uses an interdisciplinary approach that looks at the impact of AI applications on the space sector and how they interact with terrestrial critical infrastructure.
