The Shoal and the Shipwreck:

Stories from Pebble Beach on Chicago’s South Lakefront

November 14, 12:00 pm-1:30 pm, virtual

Friends of the Parks is excited to invite you to our upcoming free, virtual Netsch Lecture: "The Shoal and the Shipwreck: Stories from Pebble Beach on Chicago’s South Lakefront." Our distinguished panel of speakers will dive into the compelling geological and social history of Morgan Shoal and Pebble Beach, the section of lakefront between 45th and 51st streets. We will hear the tale of the 1914 shipwreck of the Silver Spray right off the shore, learn about the marine ecosystem that can be found around its remnants and see examples of stone carvings and other forms of art that speak to longstanding human connections to the lake.

Guest Speakers

"The Shoal and the Shipwreck: Stories from Pebble Beach on Chicago’s South Lakefront" is part of our Netsch lectures series, which is dedicated to exploring urgent issues affecting parks, the environment, wildlife, urban planning and public policy. We are using this year's lectures as part of our work to raise awareness of and mobilize support for nature-based solutions to lakefront erosion in anticipation of the Army Corps of Engineers' shoreline protection study. Learn more here.

So this event is not just about interesting stories. Like locations all along the lakefront, Pebble Beach and its unique features are at risk from storm surges and fluctuating lake levels. . . and design practices that look more to concrete than nature for protection.

We hope you will join us November 14!
