Foundational Skills in Reading Instruction - June 13-Sept 26

We are delighted to announce our next series of workshops on Foundational Skills in Reading Instruction. These courses will give you tools to work with low-literacy adults who have strong vocabulary but struggle to read and write.

There are five in-person workshops meeting at PCC Cascade or Rock Creek campuses. Exact locations to be announced after registration. You have the option to register for all 5 workshops (includes a thorough notebook and sound cards) or just 1 or more workshops.

Scholarships are available. Contact lwigle@portlandliteracy.org for more details.

Portland Community College (Cascade or Rock Creek Campuses)

Jun 13, 2026 08:30am - Jun 13, 2026 12:00pm

$150.00

Each student who registers for the complete five-workshop series will receive a Comprehensive notebook, Structured and Multisensory Approach to Literacy Support (value $175), which covers all the topics with many tools to use when tutoring and sound card decks (value $20), thanks to a generous grant from Tangela Purdom and David Roth.

Tutors who attend individual workshops may borrow the resources during the workshop or buy them as they register. The notebooks cost $175 each (they are VERY comprehensive and cost us that much to produce) and sound card decks are $20.

If you are interested in becoming part of the official 2026 cohort, please reach out to Peggy Murphy (peggy@portlandliteracy.org). If you have more general questions about the program, please contact Lorie Wigle (lwigle@portlandliteracy.org).

Note: The Language and Literacy Fund team consists of Julie Hiefield, and Susan Farra. We are very thankful for their partnership on this project.

If you are willing and able to help cover costs associated with course setup and administration, please donate as you register.
