A workshop offered through Braver Angels, facilitated by Bp. Mark Beckwith and Braver Angels Massachusetts Coordinator Rev. Dr. Daphne Burt

In our current divisive political environment, many people avoid having political conversations with others whose political beliefs or party affiliations differ from their own and polarization is fueled by how we talk about those on the other side of an issue. It's easy to regard our “side” as principled and the "other side" as self-interested. Consistent with our call to be ambassadors of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5.19-20), learn how to understand the values and concerns of those who differ from us politically and disagree better in these polarized times. Braver Angels is committed to teaching skills required for building bridges across divides and sharing our beliefs in ways that support community building and transformation.

From Bp. Beckwith: "The Episcopal Church is uniquely positioned to foster depolarizing reconciliation, as we were born in conflict, and have a solid history of answering God's call to do the next right thing."

Braver Angels is a civic organization that develops educational tools to build bridges between people divided over politics. They also partner with religious groups who use their tools in the context of their own religious traditions. https://braverangels.org/

You may register for and attend the segments in any order and combination. Clergy attending both sessions in person will be offered lunch between 12-1pm. Those who register for virtual segments will receive detailed information to join by zoom in a reminder email at least 12 hours prior to the meeting.

Most clergy who are canonically resident or licensed to officiate in the Diocese of Massachusetts are required to attend a Clergy Professional Development Day every three years in order to maintain good standing (see the document here explaining required attendance and exemptions). Also, every three years, clergy will be required to complete online training (if you do not have an account, contact the safe church administrator at your church or, if non-parochial or retired, Jennifer Garrett at jgarrett@diomass.org), and authorize our diocese to conduct a nationwide public records check. Clergy who last completed requirements in 2022 or before are due to renew training this calendar year.
