Join us for a discussion of Operation Mincemeat, a true account of British actions that helped Allies in southern Europe fool Nazi armies and contributed to victory in World War II. Ben Macintyre, the author, describes an almost wacky plot drawn from his research and his delight in cunning wartime espionage.
We will gather in Auburn between 9 and 9:30 for coffee, tea, and pastries, just 36 miles east of Sacramento. Spring is a lovely time of year for our Sierra foothills setting. Our book discussion begins at 10 a.m. using the shared inquiry method. We stay within our selected book with the help of a discussion leader, and work together to check out ideas, characters, and story implications. Newcomers are welcome, and it’s great to see friends in person again, whether from past discussions or Zoom.
We break for lunch on-site at noon. In the afternoon, we will watch the 2021 film adaptation starring Colin Firth. It was subtitled “The Spy Story that Changed the Course of World War II.“ We’ll compare the movie to the book and wrap up by 4 pm. Registration is $40, which covers lunch and expenses. Registration* closes May 9. To allow page references during our discussion, please bring the Crown edition ISBN-13: 978-0307453280, Operation Mincemeat by Ben Macintyre.
