Class Description:

This trail showcases some of the best early spring ephemerals in this region. Wear sturdy walking/hiking shoes. (Hiking boots would be best.) There is a boardwalk for a short distance but we need to go on a dirt trail to get up to a beautiful waterfall. There are many other species of wildflowers along this dirt portion, also. The boardwalk is a very easy walk and the dirt trail would be rated moderate. Walking staffs might be advisable for the dirt trail portion.

We encourage registrants to connect with each other and make multiple visits to the trail throughout the year to explore and study how the area changes. By returning to the same spot throughout the year, you can witness phenology firsthand - the shifting timing of blooms, leaf-out, migration, and countless other seasonal cues.

Participants will need to purchase a license for this visit. The cheapest option is a one-day fishing license - $5 for Georgia residents, $10 for non-residents - and it must be purchased online at https://gooutdoorsgeorgia.com/. There is a one-year (from the date of purchase) license available if you would like to revisit the site throughout the year.

PLEASE NOTE: As for restrooms, there is a restaurant at the intersection of Hwy. 193 and Hog Jowl Rd. where you turn to go to the trail. However, as of 1-11-26, it is not yet open. Not sure when that is happening but hopefully, it will be open before the trip. About 5 miles west of that turn, there is a Dollar General & a couple of not-so-clean convenience stores. Oh, and there are plenty of trees along the trail! 😂

What to bring with you:

Bring a copy of Wildflowers of Pigeon Mountain by Jay Clark or the Tennessee Native Plant Society’s Wildflowers of Tennessee by Horn and Cathcart, if you have it. If you have a 10x magnifier, that would also be helpful. We will provide you with a list of plant species you are likely to see in your pre-class email if you would like to bring it along. Hiking shoes and rain gear will be needed along with any snacks or water needed.

Registration Policy:

As with all CNP classes, class size is limited. To give everyone the best opportunity to participate, there is a non-refundable cancellation fee of $10, with the balance refunded if you cancel at least 7 calendar days before the class will be held. If the class is cancelled by the instructor or the CNP program, registrants will get a full refund.
