"Investigating the Service Life of Building Sealants Through Field Aging and Deep Learning Methods"
This seminar will focus on our ongoing research activities related to building joint sealant durability. After an introduction of the team's mission and research thrusts, we will present an overview of our three sealant research streams: long-term outdoor field aging, image-based condition assessment, and field-aged sealant testing for residual service life prediction. The technical portion will be followed by a discussion on the results of our recent industry survey developed and distributed in collaboration with the SWA.
Following the presentation, there will be opportunity to address key questions and audience Q&A.

PRESENTERS
Itzel Lopez-Carreon
Technical Officer
National Research Council's Construction Research Centre
Itzel Lopez-Carreon brings a background in chemistry and materials science to the Building Envelope Materials directorate at the NRC’s Construction Research Centre, which she joined as a Technical Officer in 2020. As part of the Building Durability and Resiliency Team, she evaluates the durability of construction materials by monitoring property changes during accelerated and natural weathering through comprehensive multi-scale characterization, including chemical, mechanical, and thermal analysis techniques. Currently, she is leading a decade-long research initiative investigating the natural aging of building joint sealants, with the goal of validating predictive crack growth models. Her work is also establishing a proof of concept for automated façade defect detection via computer vision, with the help of cross-disciplinary collaborators.
