Have a scrap yarn stash?

Want to help your community?

Have we got something for you!

Join us the first Tuesday of the month from 12:00-1:00pm to create sensory blankets and muffs for neighbors living with dementia. Your handiwork will be donated by Direction Home to local memory care units and care organizations.

Don't knit or crochet? Hang in there - we have something for you, too.

Ready to turn your yarn stash into something meaningful?

Grab your hooks, needles, and scrap yarn and join us at Direction Home each month. Whether you follow one of our printed patterns or prefer to free-stitch and see where the yarn takes you, we’d love to have you!

WHERE: Direction Home Akron Canton Area Agency on Aging & Disabilities (1949 Town Park Blvd., Uniontown);

Conference Room E

WHEN:  First Tuesday of each month from 12:00-1:00 pm

Free to attend, but seating is limited to 30 per session. Please register to ensure your spot.

This sounds great but I'm not able to join in person - how can I help?

If you can't make a session, we are always grateful for:

  1. Donations: Scrap yarn, fleece, heavy duty thread, and sewing notions.
  2. Connections: Recommendations for local organizations that could use these sensory gifts.

What are Sensory Blankets and Muffs?

Sensory blankets (often called "fidget blankets") and muffs are handmade tools designed to provide comfort and engagement for individuals living with dementia or cognitive impairment.

They are small, lap-sized quilts or cozy hand-warmers adorned with a variety of textures and attachments—like buttons, ribbons, zippers, and soft fabrics.

How do Sensory Blankets and Muffs Help?

Reduces Anxiety: Fidgeting with attachments provides a calming, meditative outlet for stress.

Boosts Brain Health: Stimulates cognitive focus and maintains fine motor coordination.

Promotes Sleep: Uses deep pressure stimulation to improve rest and relaxation.

Protective Care: Offers a safe alternative to picking at clothes or skin.

Enhances Life: Increases emotional comfort and overall quality of life for those with dementia.

Knot a Knitter or Crocheter (see what we did, there)?

No problem! You can still make an impact. Grab some fleece and create a sensory knot blanket. Just remember to bring anything you need in order to hand-sew items onto the blanket (hand-sewing needles, heavy duty thread, thimble, etc).

The Goal: Maximum Texture

Since these are sensory items for dementia patients, "fidget-ability" is key. The more textures, the better! We are looking for:

  • Tactile Yarns: Chunky, velour, eyelash, cotton, ribbon, boucle, and faux fur. (Please: No wool due to allergy concerns).
  • Fidget Notions: Zippers, ribbons, buttons, luggage tags, Velcro, beads, keychains, and crinkle fabric.
  • The Golden Rule: If it can be securely attached, it’s perfect!
