Indian Artisanal Textiles With Judy Frater

The Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Art Museum is thrilled to bring textile scholar Judy Frater for an exciting deep dive into Indian Artisanal Textiles. Judy Frater lived with the artisans of Kutch, India for three decades, where she founded Kala Raksha Vidhyalaya, the first design school for artisans. Previously Associate Curator at the Textile Museum in Washington D.C., author of Threads of Identity: Embroidery and Adornment of the Nomadic Rabaris, and The Art of the Dyer in Kutch, she has written and lectured extensively on craft. Event Schedule:


11-12pm Artisans by Design: An Odyssey of Education for Textile Artisans in India Book talk & signing. Artisans by Design offers a rare, intimate portrayal of artisans, focusing on personal connections, sustainability as cultural heritage and, creativity within tradition.


12-1pm Delicious & authentic vegetarian lunch catered by Taste of India, Mt. Vernon WA included with admission price.


1-2pm Conversations in Cloth presentation, a contemporary cross-cultural collaboration between artisan textile designers of Kutch, India and quilters from Cedarburg, Wisconsin. Learn about innovative traditional collaboration and explore textile techniques from both North America and India during this fascinating presentation.


2-3pm Trunk Show! Shop textiles designed and created by artisans featured in Artisans by Design, Judy Frater's new book.
